Unique Identification Number (UID) For all Doctors in India?
Last month the National Medical Commission released the 'Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine Regulations, 2023'. As a part of the regulations all registered medical practioners will be given a Unique Identification Number (UID). Here's the answer to some important questions you might have regarding this.
1. What is the UID?
All registered medical practiniors will be given a Unique Identification (UID) Number which will represent their entry in the National Medical Register (NMR) and eligibility to practice medicine in India.
2. Is it Mandatory?
Registration in the National Medical Register (NMR) and obtaining UID will be mandatory for practicing medicine in India.
3. Why is this being done?
The move is aimed at developing an updated, centralised National Medical Registrer that will contain the details of all medical practioners and enable the public to access information about any medical practioner and check their licence to practice.
4. How long will this be valid for?
A license is valid for five years. After the expiration of the validity period, practitioners must apply for renewal. Applications for renewal can be made three months before the expiration date.
5. Do existing practitioners registered with their State Medical Council require to get a UID?
Existing practitioners registered in the Indian Medical Register or State Medical Register will also have to apply for a UID with the Ethics & Medical Registration Board. They will obtain the Registration Number as a one-time measure.
