How do doctors get the UID and what will the National Medical Register contain?

As a part of the recent regulations by the NMC all registered medical practioners will be given a Unique Identification Number (UID), and a National Medical Registry will be maintained. I’ve already answered some basic questions in my previous post. Here's the answer to some more important questions you might have regarding this.

6. How does a doctor apply for UID?

A doctor can apply for a UID through a web portal of the Ethics & Medical Registration Board. The portal is yet to become active.

7. How long will you have to obtain a UID?

All the existing medical practitioner enrolled in the Indian Medical Register or the State Medical Register, not having the UID will have to obtain a UID within a period of three months of the regulations and portal coming into force.

8. Will there an additional cost to be paid for UID?

A processing fee shall be charged for generation of UID for all for fresh graduates registering with the NMC or state medical council for the first time.

All the existing medical practitioner enrolled in the Indian Medical Register or the State Medical Register, not having the UID, can apply for the UID, and no fee will be charged.

9. How can the National Medical Registry (NMR) be accessed and who can access it?

Any person, including the general public, can access the National Medical Registry and check the licence and credentials for any doctor in India. The NMR can be accessed on the official website of NMC -www.nmc.org.in

10. What details of the doctors will accessible to all in the NMR?

The following details of all doctors will be accessible to the public in the registry:
Name, Registration number, father’s name, date of registration, place of working (hospital/institution), medical qualification including additional medical qualification, specialty, year of passing, university, and name of the institute(s)/university(s) from where the qualification was obtained.
