Can Doctors date their Patients?

They said love knows no boundaries.

Turns out, for doctors it does. 💔

In 2019, the National Medical Council (NMC) officially took a stance on the age-old, awkward question: “Can doctors date their patients?”

They adopted the Guidelines for Doctors on Sexual Boundaries, framed by the Indian Psychiatric Society — and yes, they get very specific.

Here are 10 key takeaways every doctor should know:

1️⃣ No sexual relations with a patient.

Simple, clear, non-negotiable.

2️⃣ Even if it’s consensual — still not okay.

And even if the patient made the first move. Ethics > flirting.

3️⃣ Applies to everyone.

These rules are gender-neutral and apply to all doctors and all patients.

4️⃣ Non-consensual = criminal offence.

Sexual abuse, molestation, or rape = Indian Penal Code. Enough said.

5️⃣ Be sensitive when asking sexual history or doing intimate exams.

Use gloves. Use a chaperone. Use common sense.

6️⃣ If a patient is being sedated for a procedure,

Make sure a nurse is around during both induction and recovery.

7️⃣ Thinking of dating a former patient?

First, hand over their care to another doctor. And please run the idea past at least one senior colleague — not your group chat.

8️⃣ Wait at least 1 year before anything romantic with a former patient.

Even after handing over their care. Yes, a whole year.

9️⃣ Same rules apply to patient’s family members.

So if you’re eyeing the attendant — hit pause and check the guidelines.

🔟 Also applies to students, colleagues, and team members.

Basically: don’t misuse your position, even if you’re off the ward.

So if you’re a doctor looking for love, it’s best if you’re searching outside the hospital.

What do you think about these guidelines?
