3 Things Your Professional Indemnity Insurance isn’t likely to cover
We buy indemnity insurance hoping it will protect us when something goes wrong.
But in practice, many doctors realise after a complaint, FIR, or notice that certain situations simply don’t fall under most policies — regardless of which company you choose.
These are the most common blind spots doctors discover only when a claim is denied.
- Criminal Complaints
Indemnity insurance mainly protects against civil liability, not criminal action.
But many real-world complaints against doctors begin as criminal allegations.
- Implant, Device, and Consumable-Related Issues
This affects a wide range of specialties today. Most insurers view these as product or manufacturing issues — not professional negligence. So exclusions often include implant failure, device malfunction, instrument issues, consumable defects.
- Incidents at Undeclared Practice Locations
While some policies cover a doctor at any practice location, some are only the locations officially declared in the proposal form. So if a case arrises for a patient treated at a hospital/clinic not disclosed at the time of getting the policy, it may not be covered.
These areas are commonly excluded across most policies. It’s important to be of these so you’re not caught unprepared or surprised during a crisis.
Which of these exclusions did you not know about earlier? Any other surprises with indemnity policies you’ve got to know of after a problem? Let me know in the comments below.
